Dr. Brad Davis, Ph.D., S.E., P.E.

Dr. Davis is the owner and founder of Davis Structural Engineering.

He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from Virginia Tech in 1994 and 1996, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2008, completing his dissertation on floor vibrations under the supervision of Dr. Thomas M. Murray, who is widely considered the father of floor vibration engineering.

Dr. Davis has eight years of building design experience using all major building materials in the US. His design highlights are the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and StoneCrest Medical Center, which he designed while employed by Structural Design Group, Nashville, Tennessee.

He also has 17 years of experience in structural vibration research and engineering.

He has published over 20 papers on vibration and is a co-author of the AISC Design Guide 11, Vibration of Steel-Framed Structural Systems Due to Human Activity and the SJI Technical Digest No. 5 – Vibration of Steel Joist-Concrete Slab Floors. In 2016, he won the AISC Educator Special Achievement Award for development new evaluation methods for floors supporting sensitive equipment.

Dr. Davis has provided vibration engineering for numerous projects in design and for existing structures needing reduction of vibration levels. These projects include floors supporting sensitive equipment, balconies, monumental stairs, gym floors with barbell impacts and rhythmic group loads, and irregular floors requiring advanced finite element analyses. Design assistance highlights are the Skyline Medical Center MRI Expansion, WTC Transportation Hub (sub-consultant for Structural Engineers, Inc.), Merriweather Post Pavilion balcony, and the Rupp Arena TV camera vibration study.

Dr. Davis also has 15 years of experience teaching steel design, structural analysis, and the design of structural systems at the university level. He has won the best teacher award four times in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Kentucky.

Finally, Dr. Davis has been an active member of the AISC Manuals Committee since 2003 and is a consultant to the AISC Steel Solutions Center.
